Part One: Sergeant Marcus Reports to Count Skleros
Verbal account, transcribed by the Count's adjutant. Marcus of the Third Patrol, reporting.
The auxiliaries were received by Mother. The ruling stands as issued. They are permitted passage, trading rights, and operational freedom beyond our borders. They are not permitted shelter. Mother indicated she has work for them; she will advise through your office when the commission is ready.
The Varumani observer was present. He found the proceeding amusing. I do not know what that means and I did not ask.
Following the sounding of the horns, I escorted the auxiliaries toward the eastern barricade. They were informed of the halfling advance and the gargoyle response. At the barricade I assigned Troopers Benic, Osso, and Yad to the escort.
Beyond the Great Hall doors we found Trooper Halvath of the forward element. Dead. Two arrows, left side. He was retreating when they took him. Further into the corridor we found six from the forward barracks. Beheaded. All of them.
I will not pretend this was easy to see.
The auxiliaries requested time to rest before investigating. I told them if they would not go in, I would return with a full banda and we would clear it without them. I withdrew my troops at that point, After this briefing I will return and we will dislodge those little killers.
That is my report.
Part Two: Intelligence Summary Prepared for Phlebotomas Plumthorn, Gang-Chief
Compiled by Neb, forward scout, 3rd Finger. Based on personal observation from concealment at the old barricade door, dog’s side. Confidence ratings my own assessment.
What I Saw With My Own Eyes
The dog-soldiers brought the tall ones through the big doors. At least six of them counting the dogs. The tall ones went west, the dogs went back. That's all I saw before I had to be very still.
What I Heard Through the Wall
Something hit the door hard, like a chest or a body. Then the crossbow went off. (That's Grevvo's rig. I helped string it. I hope Grevvo is all right.) Then fire. I could smell it. Then nothing for a bit, then more noise, then it went quiet again.
I did not hear Grevvo or any of the others shouting after the fire. I am sorry to say that.
My Best Guesses, For What They're Worth
The tall ones knew about the wire or they got lucky. Given the fire, probably lucky. Grevvo's rig was set for whoever opened the door. If they knew about it they would have just not opened it. So they did something clever at the last second. That's the kind of lucky that's almost as bad as smart.
There were six of our people in that room. The fire I smelled was not a torch. That was wizard fire. I don't know if six is enough against wizard fire. I think probably not.
The back-door crew (Tipp's three) went in after. I didn't hear them come back out before I had to leave. I don't know if that's because they didn't need to run or because they couldn't.
Summary
The tall ones are in our recent aquisition. They came with the dog-soldiers, then the dog-soldiers left, then they went in. The dogs don't know they're there or don't care. Either one of those is bad for us.
Grevvo's crew is probably gone. Tipp's crew I don't know.
The tall ones are tired. I heard them arguing about rest before they even went through the door. If we hit them soon they might not be at their best.
That said: wizard fire.
Neb, 3rd Finger, forward position Still alive, which is more than I expected
