I wrote the last descriptions of the kitchen area and wrote up the three rooms that make up the upper entrance to the great library beneath.

I also started writing Moments and Liminal Questions which I'll continue to work on for this site as well as the other sites I write for Dungeon23. These are a pair of ideas that come from Jason Cordova's Brindlewood Bay.

Moments are like mini-scenes that a GM can use to reinforce the atmosphere or engage the players between activities, encounters, or locations. Here are the first three for the ruins:

Scritching noises in the walls give away the presence of rats crawling around out of sight.

A hand-sized spider clings to the ceiling in a corner of the room, light glitters as it reflects in its eyes.

A gust of wind swirls through the room, whipping up paper, leaves, and other trash from the floor.

Liminal Questions are a form of Paint The Scene question used when the PCs are passing from one section of a dungeon to another. Here are the ones I've written so far. (I'm sure I'll be revisiting these to improve them, but I think they're a good start.)

Rooms 3 & 6 - MAGULIN are the embodiment of spirits of guile, deceit, and trickery. They appear as twisted humans with enlarged, toothy maws; pointy ears; and plain, white eyes. Short tufts of thick hair stand out in clumps from their warty, grey skin. You are entering an area inhabited by these creatures. What is different about this room that lets you know MAGULIN are nearby.

Room 11 - As you enter into an open hallway that surrounds an overgrown garden, what do you sense that reveals a deep corruption of the garden and the plants growing there?

Rooms 19-21 - The outer library was once a gateway to the collected rumors and knowledge of the Land of Ten-Thousand Thousand Shrines. Now, its looted entrance lies empty before you. What stories do you remember that make you believe there is a priceless store of knowledge still hidden in the vaults below?

And, here are the descriptions of these two areas. (Rooms 12, 14, 17, and 18 were posted last week.)

11 Garden Hall
A 10' wide covered walkway surrounds the monestary garden. A plinth stands in each corner of the hallway. Deep gouges along the floor show something heavy was dragged away from the plinths and into the garden itself.

12 Outer Kitchen
Large kitchen tables are overturned, thick wooden tops facing the north doorway. The wooden slabs are marred with deep gashes. Smashed crockery and simple tableware litter the floor.
A skeleton, missing the skull lies in front of one of the tables. A POLTERGEIST haunts the room hurling debris at anyone entering and muttering or wailing indecipherable words.
If the skull in the Dining Hall and the skeleton are appropriately laid to rest, the POLTERGEIST will be appeased and show their benefactor the hidden silver place setting in the Dry Pantry

13 Inner Kitchen
Sturdy tables are pushed up against each wall. A pair of dry sinks are set into the northern tables.
An empty key hook hangs on the wall next to the eastern door, a splintered bucket and pile of trash lie on the ground beneath it.
Hidden beneath the pile is a ring with 6 keys on it. (The keys open the doors to the Abbott's Sanctum and the Gardeners Shed)

14 Dry Pantry
Shelves line the walls of this room, broken pottery sits on the shelves. Some has fallen off onto the floor.
A musty, rotten smell fills the room. Mice and insects crawl over and through the detritus.
There is a secret panel behind a pile of broken pottery shards. It conceals a small compartment.
The nook contains a finely made, full place setting in silver, including a wine jug, goblet, charger, and plate.

15 Drying Room
Shelves sag from the walls and hooks hang from the ceiling.
Loud buzzing fills the room. Wasp nests cling to the underside of the rotting wooden shelving.
If disturbed a stinging cloud of WASPS will swarm the offenders.

16 Well Entry
A small room, coat hooks are on the wall. An overturned boot rack sits beneath them.
The outer door lies, splintered, on the floor, burst from its hinges when invaders struck.
A forgotten boot is tossed in the corner. Hidden inside is a carved-stone amulet, bearing the likeness of Saint Amruss.

17 Well
The well is solidly constructed and still has clean water at the bottom, though there is neither rope nor bucket with which to draw it.
Vines have overgrown the shaft, hanging down some 20' along the walls. A silver holy symbol can be seen glittering on a ledge about 15' down.
A VENOMOUS WATERSNAKE hides in a hole in the wall just above the ledge. It can easily climb the vines and hunts small animals in the area.
It will not attack, except to defend itself from anything drawing too close to its lair. The snake wants to be left alone.
The shaft of the well gives access to the crypt.

18 Dining Hall
A pair of large tables run nearly the length of this room. Broken pottery plates, bowls, and mugs are set out as though for a meal, but any food in them has long since rotted away. A human skull lies on a wooden carving plate at the head of one table. This belongs to the POLTERGEIST in the outer kitchen

19 Library Outer Entrance
The frescoed walls of this room show people in robes carrying books and scrolls up and down stairs and through torchlit hallways.
A sturdy standing desk stands a few feet in front of the north wall. Its front and sides are solid wood from the floor to the top. They form a 6" high rim around the desktop.
Looking behind the desk reveals four drawers on the right and left side. They are empty.
If the bottom-right drawer is removed, a small niche can be seen in the floor beneath it. The space contains an ornate brass key, the bow is in the shape of a book.

20 Library Outer Reading Room
A large table surrounded by eight broken chairs. Small, ink-stained depressions run down the center of each table.
Frescoes show people sitting at the table reading and writing. Candle holders line the walls.
Four SKELETONS in frayed robes stand, at the corners of the table.
They will animate, pick up chair legs (treat as clubs), and attack if anyone attempts to damage anything in the room, attack them, or go down the stairs into the library proper.

21 Outer Librarian's Office
A simple-looking desk sits against the wall, beneath a set of broken shelves.
The frames of bookcases stand against the wall behind it, their shelves ripped out and tossed to the floor.
In the center of the room a charred skeleton lies in the center of a pile of ash and the burnt spines of books. The ceiling above is stained with soot.

Foot of the Mountain Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07744131186165304694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2260750375357967538.post-38192282184648881192023-01-21T11:53:00.007-08:002023-01-21T11:53:41.120-08:00Weekly Update - 2023-01-20
I'm still mired in my job change (which came complete with a looming deadline), but this week I've mixed in a cold just to keep things interesting. I hope y'all are having a better week than I.

What I'm reading

I'm really admiring all of the cool things folks are posting about Dungeon23. Here are hree you should check out:

Amelyth is creating amazing maps

Taichara is doing good stuff.

Pete of Garblag Games is posting about his the Shattered Temple of Kadraethis

I just finished a second pass through the first three episodes of The Darkened Threshold I'm slowly convincing myself that I need to play more Carved From Brindlewood games and maybe even write one myself.

I also just reread Maze Rats. Once My Monday group finishes Winter's Daughter, this will be the next short game I run.

In my offline time, I'm bouncing back and forth between Swords of the Serpentine and Blades in the Dark. I want to run both of these games this year. I just need to find out when and where.

What I'm writing and drawing

One conflict I'm running into as I write my Dungeon23 is how I want to write my descriptions. I absolutely love Ben L's lush writing in Through Ultan's Door but the house style of OSE is growing on me. I've been writing text entries to this point, but I think I need to try out the OSE version. A good first step would be to rewrite some entries into that - maybe even a couple of my favorites from Ben.

I'm hoping to finish the Fettered Factory maps next week. Then I'll be moving on to a redraw of the upper floors of the Ruined Monastery of St Amruss and the library (and crypt) beneath it.

What I'm playing, running, and planning

Martin Luther King Jr Day meant no lunchtime game at work. I'm excited to pick up Winter's Daughter next week. We've had a long break, so it will be important to get a quick recap to remind everyone where we are and then dive into some action to shock us back into play.

Wednesday's game was focused on putting together the clues we've gathered over the last several sessions and deciding what our next steps ought to be. It looks like we're going to dive back into investigation mode, with an eye to figuring out which factions a couple of NPCs belong to and how we can play those factions against each other.

On Thursday, the PCs spent a while navigating a cluster of flooded caves by boat. They found an exit guarded by bugbears.

Due to their semi-alliance with Shuzgrap, the new bugbear chief in the Lost City, (and a really good reaction roll) they avoided an immediate fight but were stymied in how to move forward.

They went back to the network of caves to look for another path. When they couldn't find one, they decided they needed to blitz the bugbears and get past them. Since they'd spent a couple of hours re-exploring, I gave them a small chance to surprise the bugbears and they did. We made it through their initial attack.

When we pick up next week, I'll be leading with a pair of questions:
(For the paladin) What would Galzar, the Lord of Battle, think of your breaking truce with the bugbears?
(For everyone else) How do the bugbears react to your attack after your previous negotiations?
Foot of the Mountain Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07744131186165304694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2260750375357967538.post-3255857754795001722023-01-14T10:47:00.000-08:002023-01-14T10:47:06.115-08:00Beneath the Cliffs - part 3
This week was rough. I got behind quickly due to a lot of other demands on my time. I discovered another person writing their descriptions in Obsidian, and I'm thinking about doing some reorganization based on some of their comments.

On Thursday, my wife had a late class, and I was able to use that time to write up my missing days' descriptions. I've also gone back to some earlier entries to connect them to things I wrote this week and I touched up the map (including adding numbers for two more encounter areas). You might notice I skipped a couple of rooms. I plan on going back to fill those in this week. I was trying to hit some of the areas that I felt inspired about.

8 Chapel

This room is filled with broken, wooden pews that once faced a statue at the front of the room. Needless to say, this has bit into all of my gaming activities.

What I'm reading

As part of my Dungeon 23 interest, I've been going through Cyclical Dungeon Generation and Jaquaying [sic] The Dungeon, combing for ideas. I really like both concepts, and I'm trying to find a good way of interleaving them.

I'm following a few Dungeon23 aggregators and the hashtag on Twitter. There are so many great maps and rooms being posted. Eg., this one. And of course, Dyson is getting into the act, twice

I also found an old post about Downtime - Finding the Right Buyer, which is based on Ben L's Downtime in Zyan. I'm going to be integrating this into my current AD&D campaign and the OSE (probably) campaign I'm planning to replace it. It has a nice table of complications. I added a set of benefits to go along with it:

d8

Description

1

The buyer pays an extra 20%-50% (1d4+1) for this sale.

2

The sale gives the seller(s) an extra step on their renown tracker

3

The sale embarrasses a rival party who was publicly seeking the item.

4

The buyer becomes a new Relationship

5

The sale embarrasses the rival of an NPC the seller has a relationship with.

6

The sale adds a step on a tracker for an institution the seller has a relationship with or starts a new tracker for an institution for the seller if they don't already have one.

7

The seller may take an extra Revelry downtime action as a part of selling or celebrating the sale of the item.

8

The buyer also provides a scenario hook.

I play a lot of podcasts and youtube stuff in the background. This week a really enjoyed getting back into some Monster Man - my only complaint is that after almost every episode, I want to start a brand new campaign to riff on James' ideas. I also like the new episodes of 3d6 Down the Line's Arden Vul play-through and The Dungeon Minister's family BECMI game recaps.

What I'm writing and drawing

I'm about 1/2 way through the base maps for Fettered Factory. I've still got to label them and do a bit more cleanup. Each map is being done in a DM's map with labels, secret doors, and the like, and a player-facing map that can be used in the VTT of the DM's choice.

I'm plugging away at Dungeon23. You can read this week's update here.

What I'm playing, running, and planning

Due to work constraints, we only played our Wednesday game this week. We managed to defeat the wraith and take our prisoner to the authorities who'd hired us to find her. I'm looking forward to figuring out who she's working for as we work our way up the food chain of a conspiracy that seems aimed at bringing down the kingdom where the game is set.
Foot of the Mountain Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07744131186165304694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2260750375357967538.post-82454312518434982562023-01-07T10:35:00.001-08:002023-01-07T10:35:07.399-08:00Beneath the Cliffs - pt 2
I've been moving right along on my #Dungeon23 project. We've come out to the other end, feeling better and looking forward to 2023. I hope y'all had a great holiday season and feel good about heading into the new year.

What I'm reading

As I ramp up in my new job, my free time to read, watch, and listen to stuff is suffering. I have been enjoying Zedeck's Dungeon23 cohost, and the latest podcast from The Gauntlet, The Darkened Threshold.

I grabbed David Schirduan's birthday gift to the world, Overpowered Solo Roleplaying, which looks like a really fun time. As soon as I find a half hour that's not otherwise spoken for, I'm going to give this a try in U1, U2, and U3.

What I'm writing and drawing

I'm still working on maps for Fettered Factory. This has been moving more slowly than I'd hoped, but it is moving.

I'm also working on a daily entry for #Dungeon23. I'll put weekly-ish updates here.

What I'm playing, running, and planning

I loved my regular Wednesday (player) and Thursday (DM) games.

On Wednesday, we hightailed it back to the town of Ila with a prisoner but were cut off by a pack of wild dogs that held us in place until a wraithlike being caught up to us and attacked. At first, the wraith held the upper hand, but a series of lucky strikes turned the tables and by the end of the session, we had it on the ropes.

On Thursday, the players made their way through the "back door" tunnel into the Forbidden City. They found a shrine to a snake-woman with 6 arms, then stole a set of canoes to cross an underground lake. As they paddled along, they were attacked by a group of crocs. The reptiles tipped one canoe, but the spell casters made short work of them before anyone suffered significant damage. One of the warriors who had gone overboard saw wreckage and treasure at the bottom of the lake, but our session ended before the party could investigate.
Foot of the Mountain Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07744131186165304694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2260750375357967538.post-78294642122575454492023-01-02T17:01:00.000-08:002023-01-02T17:02:27.088-08:00Beneath the Cliffs
After taking a couple of weeks away from things over the holidays, I've started in on my Dungeon23 effort. Beneath the cliffs that rise to the land of ten-thousand thousand shrines lies a heavy forest. Within that forest are the ruins of the storied Monastery of St Amruss and the library that lies beneath it.

Each area will have a map, one or more establishing questions, hooks, keyed locations, and an encounter table.

My establishing question for this location is to be asked as the adventurers first spot the ruins trhough the forest - What about the structure hints at the fall of the order that once walked its halls?

Here are the first two "rooms" in this location:

Main Entry -

The great double doors are hanging from their hinges, standing upright against the pull of ages. I'm trying to write these weekly updates even if they're shorter than normal just so I keep up the habit. If there's something you'd like me to write about, please let me know.

What I'm watching, reading, and listening to

I just listened to the latest Fear of a Black Dragon podcast (about The Isle of Dread). As usual, I'm excited to go off and run a lost world adventure, or maybe just work some of those ideas into my Land of Ten-Thousand Thousand shrines Dungeon23 project.

I also picked up a new podcast, Fine Blueprints, and listened to their episode about Bump in the Dark. The podcast seems like a good addition to my queue, and I'll be listening through the back catalog. Bump seems like a great game, and I'm left wishing I had so much more time to play all these cool games.

I mentioned this in my #Dungeon23 writeup, but Ben Laurence's Catacombs of the North Wind post is an awesome trove of Zyanese goodness. It's an example of what a Dungeon23 project can be like if set in an existing world, drawing on lore that already exists. It's also a teaser/trailer of incredible things to come from the Through Ultan's Door line of zines.

Graphite Prime wrote a good post about improving the playability of non-room, transitional spaces in dungeons, Liven up Those Corridors.

Luke Gearing has written three (so far) posts recording his Pariah campaign. You should read part 1, part 2, and part 3 for a good look at what "Old School Roleplaying When the World Was Young" could look like. I'm excited to read future updates.

What I'm writing and drawing

For the first location in the Land of Ten-Thousand Thousand Shrines, I redrew an old map of a monastery using my new digital tools/workflow and touched it up with ideas from Liven up Those Corridors. I'll be releasing it next week on itch in my map collection there. I'll be doing the same thing for the next two sets of maps I'm going to use in my Dungeon23 work, a catacomb beneath the monastery and a reworked The Climbing Tomb. These will also get some significant Jaquaysing to help improve them.

I'm also working on the maps for Fettered Factory, a commission from the Kickstarter.

I've got two little writing projects that are just waiting for the new job and commission loads to subside - one on city crawling, transitional spaces, and eliminative lists, the other is about relationships and renown. Tell me which you think I should pick up first.

What I'm playing, running, and planning

We only played two of our regular games this week, and the next couple of weeks will also be disrupted by holiday schedules at work. On the other hand, I'm planning on running a game of Mausritter for my wife, son, and daughter-in-law when we visit them over Christmas.

OSE - Winter's Daughter
The group avoided combat with the floating skeletons and explored a couple of additional rooms. They're now in the statuary room and I don't know if they realize that something important is hiding under all that mold. We'll get to that in the New Year though.

Hochheim
We were missing a player so instead of following up on the main group, we used the Downtime in Zyan zine to run downtime activities for other PCs of the players in the session. (Playing an old school game, each player has a couple of PCs with retainers so they can pick and choose which character to play on any given adventure.) They're in a small fishing hamlet that has swollen to four times its size due to troop movements in the civil war/invasion that are happening in my campaign. The illusionist attempted to gather intelligence about the enemy forces in the next town but rolled a 3, and failed to find anything useful. The ranger went Carousing with the troops, we had some fun with a couple of role-playing bits there, including (accidentally) nearly encouraging some troops to desert and chase after treasure in a nearby dungeon. The thief was thinking about investing in one of the temporary bars to create a local institution, so I created three possible options for the thief to choose from:

Leon Radnitzer's dockside shack, where they fish in the morning and sell cheap booze and fried fish at night.

Basti Schau's farm, where the widow sells pies and drinks in the old barn on the property.

Jacob Henschel's egg farm, where he's sold poultry and egg dishes alongside mead and cheap ale.

Sadly, the thief didn't bite on any of these.

Next week, we'll snap back to the revolt and duel at the bugbear encampment in the Forbidden City. The players will run Shuzgrap and Yrak. I'll be adding a pair of clocks (a la Blades in the Dark) - a 3-step clock to turn the crowd in favor of the chief and a 4-step to turn the crowd in favor of Shuzgrap.

When we finish there, we'll turn to the battle between the fishing community and the next town over, using the Battlesystem mini-rules.

Foot of the Mountain Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07744131186165304694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2260750375357967538.post-51433012533594271842022-12-10T12:25:00.007-08:002023-01-02T17:02:03.794-08:00The Land of Ten-Thousand Thousand Shrines
My #Dungeon23 Project (expect this page to be updated)

A small forested expanse lies at the foot of a mighty cliff. Between that, a mapping commission I took on, and the US Thanksgiving holiday, I've let my weekly updates slip. This is my chance to get back on that bike.

Two things

This week I'm sharing an NPC with a built-in scenario hook, along with 8 wrinkles to make that scenario more interesting.

Melody appears to be a short, young woman with dark skin and hazel eyes. Her parents are farmers who live just east of the village center and are cousins to most of the village. Melody has fallen in love with Ennric, who lives in Relaste, the next village. Melody’s family and Ennric’s family have been in a generations-long feud, that occasionally boils over into violence.

Melody approaches the party seeking safe passage for her and her beloved to Riverton, a thriving town about five days journey to the west. She fears that the two families will do anything to keep the two lovers from being wed.

Melody has a well-crafted silver necklace with a small amber pendant (worth about 250 gp) that she is willing to pay the PCs for their efforts. This is the bulk of the goods that she and Ennric have gathered to start afresh in the “big city.” (She stole it from her mother after being told to stop seeing Ennric.)

Wrinkles (roll a d8)

Ennric is much older than Melody. You can read about it from Sean McCoy (who kicked it off) here or from Ben Laurence (who drops some juicy Zyan goodness too) here. I plan on working on this project and posting about it here. I expect that there will be weeks that I don't get anything written, but I hope that I'll post something more weeks than not. I'm planning on writing it in Obsidian, but there's a nice-looking workbook from Z. W. Garth that you might look into if you want a cheap notebook to use for your project.

Speaking of Zyan, Third Kingdom Games interviewed Ben Laurence and he dropped some info about his upcoming Zyan projects. Go read it here.

Not so much reading, but I did enjoy watching Seth Skorkowky's Dungeon Design Part 1, and I'm looking forward to Part 2.

I've also enjoyed this collection of quests for thieves.

What I'm writing and drawing

I've put up a second map set on itch. Now you can grab the fully funded set He Built a Crooked House. It shows a sprawling mansion house with over 90 rooms spread between 4 floors. My Mushrooms Caves set has a map, 2 sketched maps, and a document with Underdark familiars and a collection of mushrooms. It's a quart of the way to its first funding goal which will let me publish a final version of one of the two sketches. The price for this set is currently $1 but will climb as funding goals are met and additional material is added.

Since the Fettered Factory funded, I'll be drawing six maps for the project. I'm pretty excited about this since I need to come up with a pair of new wall and floor styles for some of the maps. I've got some ideas to try out.

I'm also diving into my Obsidian vault for Zyan, with notes from the two articles linked above.

What I'm playing, running, and planning

Seven Sons

Our characters went looking for a grove outside of Ila (the town we're currently adventuring in). After a couple of false starts, we found a ring of trees that weren't native to the area. In the center of the ring, stood a weathered stone altar. We took up hiding places and looked on as a group of our enemies gathered.

After they made plans to respond to us, most of them left, but the leader remained and began a rite that gathered darkness into the grove. The darkness was crushing and as we began to take damage, one of the PCs brought forth a blinding flash of light to disrupt the ceremony. It brought a moment's respite, but that was when we had to call the game for the day.

Hochheim

As the PCs were sneaking toward the Bugbair lair in Dwellers of the Forbidden City, they happened on a patrol with Shazgrap (a bugbear hoping to overthrow the current chief and take control of the band) - the two groups parleyed and the PCs agreed to back Shazgrap's play.

The bugbear led them to the lair, detouring to let the concealed spellcaster know their plan had changed. Dominik, the mage, cast Strength on the bugbear to prepare him for the duel. The session ended as Shazgrap led the PCs into the lair, bellowing a challenge to Barnank, the current boss.

OSE/Winter's Daughter

Since we missed a game, I decided to ask the players a pair of questions to move through the Dolmenwood as they journeyed to the tomb of Sir Chyde. (I rolled for encounters and they had none.)

The Dolmenwood is known as a strange, fey-touched place. As you enter into the outer parts of the forest, it seems refreshingly normal though. What do you notice that reassures you that you're still very much in the realm of mortals? Based on their answers, we placed the hamlet of Greenbough along their path and had them spend the night there.

After eating a dinner of mushroom stew, rolls, and pie with the Ashpetal family, and spending the night in their front room, you move on from the little hamlet of Greenbough. The forest gets denser and darker. Before long you realize you've moved into the fey-touched region of the Dolmenwood proper. What do you sense that tells you that you've moved beyond the realm of men?

Once they reached the tomb, they skirted around the stone circle outside it, forced the open door, and made their way in. They explored the entry room and discovered the mosaic then moved on to the family crypt beyond. In the crypt, they spoke with the two skeletons dancing through the air and explored the room. The two skeletons moved to the attack when the PCs tried to force a coffin open. We had to end the session at this point.
Foot of the Mountain Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07744131186165304694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2260750375357967538.post-77855078534263220302022-11-17T20:39:00.000-08:002022-12-09T20:04:18.788-08:00Week of 2022-11-18
Week three of my blog restart and I've hit the end of the honeymoon period. Now it's time to buckle down and keep writing so that this becomes a habit. I could use your help to keep this going. It's always easier for me to answer questions or respond to someone, so please drop a comment about what you'd like to write about, or about something I've written.

I want to start moving the content from my patreon either here or to itch. Bookmidges look like humans standing about 1 hand (4") tall with a tail about 2" long. They wear simple clothing, often including a printer's apron. They favor colors that will blend in with the book covers in the libraries where they live. They are inquisitive and love to read. They can often be tempted by the offer of books or similar reading materials (reaction roll bonuses of up to +3 depending on the book's rarity.)

AC 3 [17], HD 1/2* (2hp), Att 1 × tiny weapon (1), THAC0 19 [0], MV 45’ (15’), SV D12 W13 P14 B15 S15 (Elf 1), ML 6, AL Neutral, XP 8, NA 1-3, TT None

Invisible Bookmidges can become invisible at will, this takes an action. If they attack or take a hostile/offensive action, they become visible until their next action.

Well Read Bookmidges spend a great deal of time reading any materials they can get their hands on. If persuaded to answer a question roll 2d6. On a 2-6 they do not know the answer, on a 7-9 they have a partial answer, on a 10+ they can give a complete answer. The GM can modify the roll based on the difficulty of the question, the quality of the library they are in, etc.

Confusion Bookmidges are capable of causing confusion, as the spell with the following exceptions: this only affects 1d6 creatures and all creatures gain a saving throw each round, regardless of their HD.

The second is the Woad Leech Woad leeches are thin, wriggling beings some 3-4 inches wide and about 4 feet long. As I read these, I'm trying to match them up with Ben Laurence's post on Citycrawling.

Fungi are on my mind. I recently went back to an old Roomscape thread Fungal Caverns Roomscape and I was blown away by some of the responses. I don't know how long Twitter is going to be around, so maybe this is a good time to go archive some of your old favorites (and maybe your new favorites too). I also grabbed a copy of The Peddler of Mycosi by Taichara - I love it! The peddler's wares run the gamut from the simple and benign to the downright weird. Here's a sample:

Fleshly Cornucopia: A tawny spore capsule; swallowed, the fungal colony spreads through the host, who may sacrifice vitality to produce two meals of edible fruiting bodies through the skin. 1d2 available.

I also grabbed a copy of Flying Fortress, by Mitchell Hollis. This is a game of pulp adventure among airship pirates, set up on a trifold. It's based on Into the Odd, so it's lightweight and looks like a dream to play. My first thought as I was reading through it was an abandoned game of Space: 1899 my group tried. I'd like to run a similar setting on this chassis and see how it goes.

What I'm writing and drawing

With the successful funding of The Fettered Factory, I'm going to be creating a set of six maps for this sandbox adventure for Worlds Without Number. I'm looking forward to getting these going.

I'm still working on writing notes in obsidian. Now that we're sharing the notes for the game I play in on Wednesday, it was kind of fun to hear the GM saying, "It was great getting notifications about the updates you were making." I know they loved the reinforcement that a player was engaging with the world and I got a little dopamine hit that will encourage me to write more notes.

What I'm playing, running, and planning

Seven Sons A couple of the other players jumped on the idea of being more explicit with our intentions and actions. I think this is making a difference in the game. Our game notes (see above) are also making more of a difference as we're able to make connections. Which sometimes raises additional questions. With the holidays coming up, we'll be taking next week off.

Hochheim The current group of PCs is trying to sneak through the city to the bugbears. At the end of our session, they'd encountered a bugbear patrol and leaped to the attack. We'll be picking things up in two weeks. Once they wrap up their dealings with the bugbears, we'll snap back to the other characters to deal with some downtime activities and a small wargaming interlude as they lead a band of the Mage-King's army against the Lýðr forces that are occupying Nehrung.

OSE We've added a player, and I've tried to set up some "Moments" and "Paint the Scene" questions for both the Keep and the trip to the Burial Mound a la Brindlewood Bay. Here are a couple of each:

Moments:

Two children run along a cobblestone street rolling a wheel and laughing. They look up from their fun and see the party. One of them grabs the wheel and they rush toward a nearby building.

Four guardsmen in chainmail, with swords at their hips walk toward the Main Gate. Townsfolk move aside to let them pass.

At the Crag's Top (see last week's update - #15 on the Keep map): "Things seem tense in the taproom. What just happened that set people on edge?"

On the path to the tomb: "You realize that you've moved out of the outer reaches of the Dolmenwood and into the Fey-tinged inner forest. What do you sense that lets you know that this is true?"
Foot of the Mountain Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07744131186165304694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2260750375357967538.post-33642531023271291582022-11-11T16:30:00.005-08:002022-11-11T16:30:00.185-08:00Week of 2022-11-11
This week I've seen a veritable explosion of newsletters, which is kind of what I'm trying to do here. I'd love to see these become cross-linked conversations with the kind of longer-form thinking that is so hard to do on Twitter and other social media sites.

Two things

Since I needed some locations for the Keep in my upcoming OSE game, here are some that you can share.:

The colorful market square surrounds a fountain where the folk of the Keep gather water. Lines run from the fountain to the buildings and walls around the square and small flags in blue, yellow, and green flutter from them in the wind. On market days, the square is crowded with farmers selling their produce. There are three more or less permanent stalls here as well. A glass blower, a barber, and a potter all work here and sell their wares.

The Crag's Top is a simple tavern serving the local community and any travelers. Garren, the barkeep, and their wife Lydia watch over the establishment and serve warm comforting food alongside a small variety of drinks. Garren's brother is among the outlaws that dwell in the forest near the Keep and Garren sympathizes with them. A 'peddler' who stops by the Keep every 10 days or so serves as a contact between Garren and the outlaws.

What I'm reading/watching

One thing that really struck me this week was Jon Harper's video on Game Rhythm & Calling For Rolls, more on that below. I also liked the recent Fear of a Black Dragon episode on Feast, which has me thinking about how things are progressing in my home campaign with the cult of the King in Yellow and the Cult of the Lost God both coming more and more to the surface. With the looming destruction of Twitter, I've been jumping on more mailing lists. The Indie RPG is currently running a series looking at cities in games. This week's email was on The City. Their Links of the Week section also got me restarted thinking about reincorporation (again more later).

What I'm writing and drawing

I'm putting together the sketch of the 3rd set of caverns for my mushroom caverns set on itch. It hasn't sold as well as I'd hoped, so I think I'll also draw up the final map of the 2nd set and tick the status forward to that point. I've been playing with some hex grids to make that easier.

I'm also kicking around a renown system based on Ben Laurence's Downtime in Zyan. I'm going to try to get this into a semblance of order so I can post an early version of these thoughts soon - maybe this weekend.

What I'm playing, running, and planning

Seven Sons

In this week's game, I tried two approaches that I think will help change our game. The first is being more explicit in declaring what I wanted to achieve with my actions to let the GM better respond. This is an idea I've seen a lot of recently, e.g., in John Harper's video (see above). The other is reincorporation, my most recent sighting of this idea was Table Techniques: Reincorporation.

Here's an example of being more explicit. Our characters were following a merchant named Kohl, who we suspected of being linked to a cabal of rich merchants trying to overthrow the government. When we confronted him, I led off by telling the GM, "I plan on dropping names of other members of the cabal and watching Kohl's reaction." With that framework laid, we played through a very direct (and somewhat shorter) interaction between the PCs and the NPC.

Since the GM knew what we were looking for, he was able to frame his response in a way that made more sense for the setting and aim. This felt more respectful of our limited time at the table and made it easier to role-play a social interaction. I really liked the way it felt and plan on using this approach more as both a GM and a player. Using reincorporation as a player was a bit harder to do, but I love how it paid off for us.

After our interaction with Kohl, we pulled back to observe him, After a little while, he rushed off. After a quick tail/chase, we followed him to a large building that looked a bit like a tavern. The building was secured, guarded, and not open to the public.

We found a kid on the street and asked them about it. They said it was "a private club for rich folks". Knowing that, I thought about the wealthy NPCs that were on our radar and asked about them. This opened up a second discussion about one of the bigger villains we've encountered and gave us more info about them.

Hochheim

This week the players met the mongrelfolk in the Forbidden City. A good reaction roll and some difficult parley (aided by a pair of comprehend languages spells) led to them teaming up. The mongrelfolk offered to teach the PCs the trade language that is in use in the ruined city (It's far from the PCs' home, so none of them speak the local languages) and teach them about the various factions at play. They wanted the PCs to eliminate the threat of the nearby bugbears.

The druid shapeshifted again to do some recon. Based on the info they gathered, the PCs came up with a basic plan to deal with the goblinoids - though they also discovered a potential rift within the bugbear camp. I'm interested to see how they leverage that.

Set up for OSE

I kicked things off in the Keep so that the players can gather some information if they want (as described in Winter's Daughter). I just listened to a Blogs on Tape episode about The Keep on the Borderlands, which is coloring my thoughts as I prepare for our mini-campaign.
Foot of the Mountain Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07744131186165304694noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2260750375357967538.post-73807309968617519012022-11-05T12:29:00.001-07:002022-11-05T12:29:28.726-07:00Week of 2022-11-04
As part of my renovations around here, I'm going to try to write a weekly recap of the things I'm doing around gaming.

Two things

I'd like to start out each week's overview with two things that I hope you can use at your table. This week I'll lead off with two OSE NPCs suitable for use as retainers:

Bartek (They/Them), Dwarf L1, S 13 I 7 W 9 D 11 Co 15 Ch 8, Saves D 8 W 9 P 10 B 13 S 12

Description: Dark brown hair, and a long braided beard to little to cover Bartek's tattoos. They are tall and lean for a dwarf. They often appear distracted, though they are probably just bored. Bartek is a tee-totaler. They smell of soap and leather polish. Their armor is older, but well-maintained.

Motivation: Bartek wants to prove themself as a warrior so that they can return to thei mountain halls they call home. Prior experience has taught them to look for someone a little smarter to do the planning.

At The Table: speaks haltingly and a little too loudly.

Quote: "But . . . what do you . . . think we should do?"

Tenriss (She/Her), Thief L1, S 10 I 8 W 9 D 14 Co 9 Ch 12, Saves D 13 W 14 P 13 B 16 S 115

Description: Bald, but has several wigs. Likes to wear bright colors when not working. Always has a dagger at her hip.

Motivation: Tenriss' family were once well-to-do merchants, but fell on hard times. She wants to live the high life she remembers and is willing to bend a few rules to make that happen.

At The Table: laughs nervously when speaking

Quote: "Mmm, that is good wine. It reminds me of sipping from my father's collection when I was little."

What I'm reading

I'm continuing my reading and working with Downtime in Zyan by Ben Laurence. It's hitting the sweet spot for my desire to make downtime more useful/interesting in my campaigns. I'm also trying to push for the GM of my Wednesday game to pick it up for his game. It should be on sale soon, once the kickstart distribution is complete.

I'm also looking harder at substack. I've been reading articles from Sean McCoy and Monte Cook among others. These are dribbling into the advice I'm giving my Wednesday GM as he continues to tweak and playtest the game we're playing.

Offline, I recently got copies of Swords of the Serpentine which I'm reading when I'm away from my phone and laptop. It's making me think about Cities as Point Crawls (from a Ben Laurence blog post), which I'm diving into a bit deeper.

What I'm writing and drawing

I'm currently working on itchfunding a small set of maps, with some modest financial goals though not much success. The finished product will be a set of three cavern maps in a variety of gridded, labeled, and player-facing options with a document of cave/cavern/Underdark flavor and a system-agnostic key for each map by the time it's done. The set is currently selling for $1 and will gradually increase in price to $7.50 as I complete the various pieces. Of course, buying in at a lower level will give you access to the whole set from that time on out.

Last week, I wrote a quick post about using Obsidian for my gaming note-taking.

What I'm playing, running, and planning

Seven Sons - On Wednesday, last week, we crawled around the town of Ila, where we've been digging into a conspiracy that seems centered around some of the merchants and a coven of witches. One of the PCs was invisible and tailing a merchant named Agatha, who seems caught up in the conspiracy. We tried to follow him - which proved harder than we'd thought.

Hochheim - The PCs in my Thursday game, have returned to the Climbing Tomb. Fought off some scarecrows, and went through the portal to the Green Hell. Last session, they trekked through the wilderness (only getting lost once) and eventually reached the edge of the rift containing I1 - Dwellers of the Forbidden City, where they hope to find the second piece of the broken Star of Dralm. This week, they scouted from the rim and Aerix, the druid, changed shape into a songbird and flew over parts of the ruins to see what he could learn. We left off the game after they'd descended a crumbling path the floor of the rift.

Set up for OSE - I ran a session 0 for 4 players on Friday. None of them have played OSE before, and one has never played any TTRPGs. We generated characters and set up expectations for the game. They're going to be playing through Winter's Daughter, based out of the Keep of B2 fame. If it goes well, the PCs may push on to explore the Caves of Chaos.

As part of my prep, I created a couple of spell books (inspired by Ben Laurence's Ten Starter Spellbooks and W Denning's How I Prep Con Games). If you're interested, here they are:

The Praxis of the Higher Planes

A tattered copy of a copy. Most of the really interesting stuff is missing, but this could be a good starting point for researching spells pertaining to light, vision, and the effects of the higher planes. It contains the following: (1) Light, Protection from Evil; (2) Invisibility

The Libram of Controlled Perigression

Copied from the original by an unreliable scribe, an apprentice of Ogrindar the Baleful (who has the original in their possession), this work could provide the foundation for research into controlling access through physical spaces. Any real work would require other works, including the original from which this volume was created. It contains the following spells: (1) Hold Portal, Shield; (2) Knock

Foot of the Mountain Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07744131186165304694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2260750375357967538.post-29159315812794493162022-11-05T09:49:00.003-07:002022-11-11T14:56:43.346-08:00RPG Note-taking in Obsidian
I need to admit up front that I have a problem. Well, two problems. Ok, I have lots of problems, but two of them pertain to this post.

First, I take a lot of gaming notes. Player or DM, I sketch maps, I jot down ideas, I try to make connections - and all those notes stack up.

Second, I'm lousy at keeping them organized. I've started notebooks, only to have them die half-full. I have folder after folder of google notes (many shared with my fellow players so they can ignore them at their leisure.) They're in varying degrees of completion and abandonment. And that makes them far less useful to me (or anyone else.)

Recently, I've been trying something new, and I think it's working. I happened on a note-taking tool called Obsidian that allows you to create a "vault", write notes in markdown (basically raw text), and visualize connections between the things you've written (if you are willing to do a little work.)

For example, here's a map of my notes for a game I'm playing in, focusing on the "Unanswered Questions" file.

All told, I've got 66 files (some are as much as 10 pages long) of notes on this game with tags to help organize things. This kind of view lets me quickly see where connections might lead and can help our group decide which threads we want to pull on.

I like writing this way, because it's quick and easy, with an almost immediate payoff. Here's a paragraph from some of our game notes (the names in double brackets are set up as cross-links):

Gil asks about getting some work, and [[Natalia]] sets him up with an “interview” for a job (Gil, Gunnar, and Bo go with him) [[Deneth]] is looking for guards for a trip to [[Yadzu]] or [[Nameth]]. Gil demurs, and asks if there’s anything local. He mentions that there’s a local shop that might need something and offers to put in a good word with them. Gill says we’ll return in the afternoon and check in.

Because I can set up multiple sets of notes, I'm able to use the app easily for each game I play in, run, or plan.

I tried to set up a concordance of all things Zyan (Ben Laurence's dream-world setting). Initially, I stalled out trying to make it work. in a spreadsheet. I thought about setting up a full-blown database but couldn't work up the energy. Last week, I started over in Obsidian, and I'm loving it!

Because Ben has posted so much material to his blog, as well as in the published Through Ultan's Door zines, having a map of what information connects to what and where I can find out more is a huge win. Obsidian is making it easy to set that up.
Foot of the Mountain Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07744131186165304694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2260750375357967538.post-72250497489934378632021-12-20T16:30:00.001-08:002021-12-20T16:30:00.198-08:00From the Foot of the Mountain 17 December 2021

Hi there! Welcome to my first shot at creating a newsletter. Let's see if this is something I can do each week, and whether or not it's something y'all are interested in. I have some ideas about what I'll be writing but let me know what you'd like to see more or less of and I'll try to make it happen.

In my games this week

One of my two 1e AD&D groups is playing through Through Ultan's Door Issue 1 and is really enjoying it. I'm currently coordinating with one of the players in my other game to run a series of games as a guest DM. He's going to be running Gratkil - The Citadel That Crawls from Dissident Whispers which is a great-looking adventure as well.

Prep Ideas

The idea of patrons for PCs has popped up a few times recently, and I think this approach will fit well with my Friday group. I'm working on a trio of potential patrons along with hints that will point toward them., and maybe a direct invitation to "the Heroes of Saltmarsh". One idea I want to steal is to treat the patrons as semi-competitive (or fully competitive) factions with resources, goals, and a regular roll to see how they move forward. I want to make those rolls player-facing to help them see changes happening in the world. Next week, I'll share a write-up of one of these patron write-ups.

What I'm Working On

Magic Candles I'm going to be posting a series of twelve pairs of magic candles for my patrons. I'll collect these, along with a couple of other related bits, to create Four and Twenty Candles, a Zine I'll put on itch in January. Here's an example:

Cursed Candles

These candles are indistinguishable from other magical candles and might appear as a specific kind from the list above. When lit, they affect the individual lighting them as described below. Anytime the possessor of one or more cursed candle(s) takes out a candle to light, they will pull out a cursed candle that will take on the appearance of the one they mean to light.

Candle of Monster Summoning When lit, the candle will summon monsters as per the Monster Summoning IV spell. The monsters will be hostile to the summoner, and will remain for 1d3+1 turns unless placated, killed, or driven off.

Self-editing pass on zines

As I was using Vade Arcanum and A Woodland Path recently, I found some errors in the text. This pushed me to start proofreading pass on them. I've put both of them on itch in an attempt to fund hiring an editor, until then, you're stuck with me. I want to post a new release of each in January.

Podcasts

I've got a line-up of podcasts I listen to regularly. There are a couple of actual plays, some about gaming mechanics, and some reviews of books and adventures. Here are a couple that I'm focused on this week.

I'm listening to Fear of a Black Dragon - The Ghost of Mistmoor more or less on repeat right now as I work on a ghost story adventure for Kinopea (and maybe one for Høglund while I'm at it). Jason and Tom do a great job making me think about how I DM and how I create adventure settings.

Yum DM's first podcast, a fireside with Black Dragon Games and Manticore Tale. They do a great job talking about world-building and their approaches to gaming. I'd love to sit at a table with any or all of them to chat and play. You might also want to look at Yum's d12 zine - it's a great collection of tools, tips, and ideas for all editions of D&D.

Tweets & Blog Posts

Dungeons & Possums has been working on Dicevember prompts this month. One of his posts includes a full-on adventure with several fun little wrinkles - Forest. Check it out.

Black Dragon Games is super inspirational. I love it when he posts spells, monsters, and magic items. His play reports are good reads as well. I think his recent thread about the knock-on effect in world-building is a good example of the kind of thing that happens when you really dig in and start building your world. To my mind, it's the best kind of game prep.

Games & Stuff

There is a ton of stuff coming out for Mausritter right now. ManaRampMart has release a set of NPCs and an oracle for solo play. In fact, you should just go and check out his main itch page for all kinds of gaming goodness.

Cairn is also seeing a lot of love. with an oracle (again from ManaRampMatt) and an Adventurer's Guide. I'm looking forward to running more Cairn in 2022 and stuff like this and

I should also mention that I've got a sale running right now on my Vade Arcanum and A Woodland Path zines. You can get the pair of them for just a buck. If that sounds like too much, there are community copies available too.

Happy Gaming!

Pat Eyler Foot of the Mountain Adventures
Foot of the Mountain Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07744131186165304694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2260750375357967538.post-997938971634792702021-12-07T18:00:00.002-08:002021-12-18T12:37:23.033-08:002021 Gaming
In 2021, I tried to be more mindful about playing new games and involved my lunchtime gaming group at work in this effort. Here's an overview of how that went.

Things I kept playing:

AD&D -

My regular game split into two games. This was mostly a response to the two different play styles at the table.
One group is still playing in the old setting. They're more engaged in factional play and digging into clues and rumors. It's a sandbox and is more experimental - we've taken on a bunch of rules from @BlackDragonCan's posts on Bhakashal. We play (nearly) every Thursday.
The other group plays in a new setting, which relies a lot more heavily on published. adventures. It's more of a straight-up, deal with what's in front of us style of play. We play on Fridays.

I also ran a game in what might turn into a "learn to play" campaign, though one of the players had a new baby last week, so we're on hold for a bit.

In addition to my own adventures, we've played in U1 The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, U2 Danger at Dunwater, Through Ultan's Door vol I, and Tomb of the Serpent Kings.

Mausritter - One game from the end of 2020 carried over into 2021, and I ended up running a second game for the DM of the Stack o' Dice podcast (I based this one on his setting as kind of an easter egg) and some friends. I really enjoy this game and I'm sure I'll be playing more of it.

Crash Pandas - Three raccoons had to scavenge parts to get their car up and running then race across Phoenix. Dice were thrown, mayhem ensued,

[Edit - I managed to forget a game I played in] OpenQuest - One of my players ran the Quickstart Adventure for OpenQuest for several of us. I'm really glad I bought into the Kickstarter on this one.

Things I started playing

Space 1899 - We played the quickstart adventure - the Monastery of Tasharvan. The rules played smoothly and I love the setting. I grabbed a bunch of sourcebooks and adventures when they were on sale and I can see myself running this again, and stealing some monsters for other games.

<strike>Beneath</strike> Under The Floorboards - We played an expedition to the cellar to collect some wax candles. We had a great time with the system. I still want to run this for a bunch of Jermlaine protecting their lair.

Mothership - We played The Haunting of Ypsilon 14. I liked it so much I bought into the Kickstarter for the boxed set.

Cairn - we ran a group of Frogfolk, Lizardfolk, and Turtlefolk on a quest to save their swamp from an emergant chaos. Very similar to Mausritter, another one that I'm looking for reasons to run.

Night of the Hogmen - a Forged In The Dark starter for the upcoming game Teeth. It was really evocative and played well. I could see replaying this as a Halloween one-shot at some point.

FATE of Cthuhu (FATE Accelerated) - speaking of Halloween games. We played this over the week leading up to Halloween. We're planning on more FATE in the near future.

Things I'm playtesting

Kinopea - A lightweight, class-free system that relies on traits to define characters. It's set in a magic-soaked analog of Rome, where the Tyrant has made a deal with the devil (in the form of an AEther-node at the heart of the city. Gameplay focuses on class struggle, political factions, and the need to maintain your AEther. This is coming out soon.

Høglund - from the publisher of Kinopea, this is a heavier version of the system. It uses both classes and traits. It is set in a Norse-inspired Fey culture with an emphasis on role-playing, for example, you must successfully boast about your actions in a mead hall to gain levels.

Seven Sons of Aerulon - One of the players in my lunchtime group is creating a new game based on his D&D(ish) setting from his teens. We've got a pair of ongoing games in this setting/system. This game is also class-free and trait-based. One of the coolest things is the modular magic system. Free-from spells are cast by combining runes and spending Lidigea.

Foot of the Mountain Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07744131186165304694noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2260750375357967538.post-57805869513887172512021-02-13T10:10:00.005-08:002021-02-13T10:16:49.952-08:00Monstrous Cities

The other day, I was listening to James Holloway's Monstrous Cities episode of Monster Man. It was an inspiring dive into how a city of monsters could be run in a game world, and I'm going to lean on it for an upcoming short-arc game of Cairn where the PCs will play bullywugs and lizardmen making common cause against an external threat.

Earlier that day, I was attending a virtual conference and one of the speakers shared the slide above - and I think this is a great idea for a monstrous city. Perhaps the inhabitants (human or otherwise) have come under the power of an ancient intelligence that has molded their culture to serve itself. The roads, canals, and sewers form the alimentary and circulatory systems, "temples" could be the communications systems, perhaps there are a series of watchtowers that serve as the auditory and visual systems. All of these would also be points of interface for the micro-fauna/population.

The populace might trade for "nutrients" or other essentials for the city's health and development, some of which might seem bizarre to neighboring communities.

I think there are a lot of ways you could go with this - and it would work so many different settings as well (sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, fantasy, horror, etc.)

What do you think? Is this something you'd like to build on, or that you're already using?
