Underdark Waterfall

This cave and series of waterfalls has long been a watering stop along an underdark tunnel.  Recently a pair of ettercaps has taken up residence.  They tend to stay hidden on the shelf along the first waterfall and the cave further upstream.  When they see travellers that seem like easy pickings, they will leap upon them in an ambush.

A number of large and huge spiders inhabit the main part of the cave.

The cave and tunnels leading to it are heavily webbed, and a number of trip lines give both the spiders and the ettercaps forewarning of anything approaching.

While ettercaps and spiders do not gather treasure, there is likely to be some amount of incidental treasure - perhaps from https://dungeonspossums.blogspot.com/2018/12/random-treasure-tables.html

A road-side shrine

For many years, a simple road-side shrine and chapel have been a feature of the road from Miles Crossing and Sand Lake.  Old Brother Willet welcomed travelers and often provided a warm loaf of bread and a bowl of fish stew to those wanting to wait out an afternoon rainstorm.

Then, about a week ago, he disappeared. At first, no one thought anything of it, then things started happening.  A nearby farm reported something spooking the animals. Travelers report a foreboding feeling, and traffic along the road is starting to dwindle.  Someone needs to get this sorted before it gets any worse.

What has happened to Brother Willet?  And what will become of the Sand Lake Road?

Three Caves

After being ambushed by a patrol of orcs, the party is able to track them back to a small, marshy valley.  There are caves on both the east and west walls of the canyon and one hidden behind a waterfall to the north.

These three caves are home to a small band of orcs with a shaman and a mated pair of ogres who back them up. If you want to bump out the challenge level, perhaps the shaman could be replaced with a half-orc fighter/cleric or another NPC willing to use a band of orcs.

Abandoned(?) Crypt

Beneath the ruins of an old, country church is a crypt holding the remains of the priests who once oversaw the chapel.  Something else lurks behind the facade of simple ruins.

When the crypts were initially dug, the workers broached the walls of some natural caverns.  They bricked it over the best they could, but something called silently to those who entered the crypt to reverence the dead.  Those with weaker wills would sometimes answer the call.

Now that the church lies in ruin, and the crypts are no longer visited, the thing behind the walls is hungrier, its call more compelling. It has even begun to taint the plants and animals that live near the narrow shaft that climbs to the surface from the depths of the caverns.

Spell Variations

After a discussion with Zach (@JellyMuppet) and Luka (@StrataMetaship), and a blog post from Zach, I decided to play at a set of variations for 1E here are 7 for your gaming pleasure.

By the way, Menress' Frozen Portal (posted in https://soulmuppet.blogspot.com/2018/12/some-variant-spells.html ) and Menress' Shattering Cold (posted below) are both from an adventure I'm working on, along with a third spell Menress developed that will be published with the adventure.

1st Level
Wyrlot’s Whistling Servant (M-U 1) - This spell creates an unseen servant who whistles songs while working for the caster. ‘Unseen Servant’ lasts six turns plus one turn per caster level. The created servant can perform simple tasks upon command. Tasks can be changed upon command. The servant can exert no more than twenty lbs of force.

2nd level
Menress’ Shattering Cold (M-U 2) - This spell encases an item in ice, then shatters it. Otherwise, it is like the spell ‘Shatter.’  The spell ‘Shatter’ causes an item of up to ten lbs per caster level to shatter into pieces, save vs crushing blow.

Olorin’s Friendly Knock (M-U 2) - Only after trying multiple words or phrases, the stuck portal will open when the mage speaks the word “friend” - functions like the ‘Knock’ spell. ‘Knock’ will undo up to two, non-gravity based) methods of holding a door closed, including ‘Wizard Lock.’

Ray of Clumsiness (M-U 2) This is similar to the spell ‘Ray of Enfeeblement’. It reduces the dexterity and movement of the target by 25%, attacks will be made at -2 and initiative is at -1. If the target’s dexterity is reduced below a class minimum, it doe not affect membership in that clas as the effect is only temporary. ‘Ray of Enfeeblement’ affects one target (saving throw negates effect) within 10 feet plus three feet per caster level.

Skandar’s Hornet Bolts (M-U 2) - This spell is a variation of ‘Magic Missile.’ Each missile stings the target like a hornet, forcing a save vs poison or doing an additional d3 of damage. ‘Magic Missile’ automatically hits its target(s) doing 1d4+1 damage, one missile is created plus one for every two caster levels above 1st.

Usidore’s Blinding Flock (M-U 2) - Upon casting, a massive flock of small birds gathers (or appears) and functions as the illusionist spell ‘Wall of Fog.’ ‘Wall of Fog’ creates an obscuring curtain of fog twenty cubic feet per caster level.  The fog lasts 2d4 rounds plus one round per caster level.

3rd Level
Quidro's Shrieking Runes (M-U 3) This functions like the spell ‘Explosive Runes,’ except that a sonic blast replaces the flaming explosion - the object on which they’re cast is unlikely to be harmed, and anything nearby will be alerted by the noise. ‘Explosive Runes’ creates runes mingled among other text, it does 6d4+6 damage (save for ½ damage) to all in a 10 ft radius.
